PHOTOS FROM OUR BEER & CURRY EVENT WITH PRASHAD

Posted by Mark in Sparrow News

When we were asked by Prashad to hold a few joint curry and beer events we got excited. Prashad is a bradford born institution. Kaushy and Mohan Patel opened it’s doors 22 years ago as a small Indian vegetarian deli in the backstreets of the Girlington area of Bradford. The restaurant has since moved to a 60+ seater restaurant in Drighllngton. In the last few years Prashad has gained recognition from Gordan Ramsay as finalists on Channel 4′s Ramsay’s Best Restaurant 2010, and has been named in the Michelin guide and The Good Food Guide. The guys at Prashad are as passionate about vegetarian Indian cuisine as much as we are about beer. It made sense to work together and share our passions. We wanted to change peoples perceptions of what vegetarian Indian cuisine and beer are, and to show people how innovative and exciting they can be. We also wanted to demonstrate that beer works better than wine when it comes to food pairing, especially with curry.

The first event was at The Sparrow on 24th March. The team from Prashad brought a variety of Indian street food snacks such as the crunchy Special chaat salad and coconut pethis. We offered three different ales to compliment the tasty treats including Ilkley Mary Jane, Goose Island IPA and Thornbridge Jaipur. All beers were light and refreshing – perfect for washing down the spicy goods.

The events at Prashad took place on 9th & 16th April in their ‘Grande’ dining room. Six courses of Prashad’s famous Indian food were matched with six of our beers. First up was the spicy popcorn and pickle tray paired with Gueze Boon. The turmeric and chilli laced popcorn married well with the peppery, spicy, dry and crisp Belgian Lambic beer. The second course was a toasty, spicy coconut pethi served with sweet Mongozo Coconut beer. An obvious match that went down well. Next up was Kalva – bitter fenugreek and banana bhajis that were complemented with Schneider Weisse Original (Scheider Weisse is a Bavarian Hefeweizen that has a full on banana flavour). The next two courses were Massala Dosa with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and Biryani with Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA. Both beers were light, hoppy and robust that cut through the spicy flavours of the curries. A ginger chocolate tart and a rich, boozey Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout finished the night nicely.

All three events sold out and it was an absolute pleasure working with Prashad. We hope to work with them again soon.

BANTAMS HISTORY WEEK LAUNCH // SAT 20th APRIL // 12 noon

Posted by Mark in Events, Sparrow News

We are pleased to hold the launch of Bantams History Week! At 12 noon Mark Lawn, chairman of Bradford City, will pull the first pint of Baines Blonde, an exclusively produced beer brewed for the event by Saltaire Brewery. John Baines invented packeted football cards in 1885. Millions of these cards were produced down the road at 15 North Parade! Come down for a beer and learn how a Bradford based company shaped global football culture. The launch falls on the same day as Bradford City’s last home game of the season.

http://www.bantamspast.co.uk/

Press release:

The Bantams’ History Week will be launched at the Sparrow Bier Café at noon with the pulling of Baines Blonde, the first pint of an exclusively produced beer brewed by Saltaire Brewery. A brief welcome and talk will be given by the organiser of the Bantams’ History Week, and author of Glorious 1911 and Paraders, David Pendleton, about the History Week itself and the hidden sporting history of North Parade.

North Parade, historically one of the smarter streets in the city centre, has strong links with the heritage of Bradford City AFC. Baines Cards, producers of millions of collectors cards depicting sports personalities and clubs in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, had its base on North Parade. Originally from Manningham, the company moved to North Parade as its business grew to staggering proportions. Featured on their cards were numerous players of Bradford City, Bradford Park Avenue and Bradford Northern. However, Baines also catered for a national and international audience and every conceivable sporting aspect was covered by their cards which were avidly collected by boys young and old.

From Montevideo to Manchester, Tokyo to Turin, today the appeal of football cards knows no bounds. Yet how many people are aware that this global obsession has its roots in Victorian Bradford? John Baines, a Bradfordian who shaped global football culture.

The sporting heritage of North Parade will be celebrated by a storyboard displayed on the walls of the Sparrow Bier Cafe. You will be able to toast that heritage with a pint of Baines Blonde, specially produced by Saltaire Brewery and exclusively on sale at the Sparrow.

Designed for beer connoisseurs and passionate foodies, these ticketed events will offer the opportunity to get a real education in some of the finest international food and drink Yorkshire has to offer in two very different settings.

First, The Sparrow will host an informal gathering of beer lovers with the chance to taste Prashad’s famous finger food and roadside snacks whilst enjoying a few pints of specially selected beers from around the world. The Sparrow’s owners, along with their suppliers and network of experts, will provide a combination of classic beers and more exclusive editions that are rarely available in the UK.

A few weeks later, ticket holders will take part in an extra special authentic Indian dining experience at Prashad’s new restaurant in Drighlington, where they will be served five courses of delicious vegetarian Gujarati-influenced tapas, along with tasters of hand-picked beers chosen to perfectly complement the food. Each course will come with expert commentary from a leading beer expert and Prashad’s passionate team. Far from being just for veggies, this event will take even the most committed carnivores on a journey of discovery through new tastes, textures and flavours – with Prashad’s guarantee that you won’t miss the meat!

You can call to reserve a ticket but it must be collected and paid for within 48 hours. You must keep your original tickets and present them on the door on the night of each event.

We hope to repeat this exciting collaboration again in the future so if you aren’t one of the lucky ones that gets a ticket, watch this space for future opportunities…
